In this area of my blog you'll find some of the works and activities done throughout the year on my AP English class. :)
Early on a very interesting, twisted writer caught my attention: Sir Edgar Allan Poe.
As we divulged into this writer's psychotic, murderous mastermind, we bumped into an intriguing work:

The caretaker and the old man are presented. |
![]() |
The old man's evil eye haunted the caretaker. |
![]() |
Every night, for a week, the caretaker would enter the old man's quarters to stare at his eye. |
![]() |
Driven mad by the evil eye, the caretaker ends up killing the old man and burying his corpse under the floorboards. |
![]() |
As the police came in to investigate, the caretaker's guilt was getting the best of him... |
![]() |
All he heard was... |
Later on we came across a tragic love story:
![]() |
I was a child and she was a child, in this kingdom by the sea; but we loved with a love that was more than a love- I and my Annabel Lee. |
![]() |
And so, all the night-tide I lay down by the side Of my darling - my darling- my wife and my bride... |
From the dark mastermind we surfed right on through to the inspiring story of Bethany Hamilton, adapted into the huge blockbuster known as:
This story depicts the tragic accident that transpired one summer, in which a young surfer suffered a shark attack and as a result lost her left arm.
But with faith, hope, and the support given to her by family and friends, she has become one of the world's best surfers.
With Bethany's inspiring story behind us, we explored the world of figurative language!
As discussed in class, there are many types of figurative language. Here are the most common:
Simile:
Metaphor:
Personification:
Onomatopoeia:
Hyperbole:
Understatement:
Alliteration:
Allusion:
After learning about figurative language, we stepped into the literary world when embarked on the fantastic, out of this world novel:
This famous novel tells the story of a young boy living in a utopian community and how he is granted a position of utmost responsibility and learns the true meaning of life as he embarks on a world-changing journey.
Lest we forget that after reading the novel we went on a journey of our own, all the way to Santurce, to see the interpretation of said novel.
A great play, featuring very talented actors, it represented the novel in quite an unexpected but enjoyable way. Props to the director, producers, actors and the whole staff that planned this interpretation.
We can't let a small detail go by unmentioned. On our way back from the play we made a small, delicious, sweet, detour. Oh yes, KRISPY KREME!!!
From the production facility to the variety and eventual devouring of the doughnuts, it was a great time all around. Although, I miss my little complimentary hat Mr. Urban :'(
From literary prose we passed on to the most beautiful way of written language. You know what I'm talking about:
So what is poetry? Well to make a long story short, poetry is:
It's a way of getting out what you have to say, what you think what you feel, no repercussions whatsoever!
We moved right on to:
where we learned a thing or two bout the basic structures in poems and such, like for example:
Well this is about it for me. We made much, much more. This is barely scratching the surface on all we did during this year in AP English. Our minds were challenged, creativity and knowledge pushed to its limits. It was a great year, full of individual growth as well as social growth. We truly became our own little family. :)
